Federer beats Tipsarevic to make Madrid Open final

Roger Federer defeated Janko Tipsarevic 62 63 to reach the Madrid Open final where he will play Tomas Berdych, a 76 76 winner over Juan Martin del Potro.

In his fifth meeting with Tipsarevic, Federer improved to a perfect 5-0 record as he dispatched the Serb in 67 minutes. Tipsarevic had ousted defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, but lost his serve three times against Federer and won just 24 per cent of his return points.

Federer broke his opponent’s serve with the score reading 1-2 and steadily built up a lead, eventually taking the first set after a second break.

The second set continued in a similar vein, with Federer taking an early 1-3 lead that he maintained to kill off the tie

"I think that the main reason is that he was a better player than me out there," said Tipsarevic. "The main thing is that he managed to adjust to the wind really, really well. I think that apart from being the best player, that he is probably the best the player in the world when it comes to adjusting to any situation on the court.

"It was a great event for me. I played semis, I beat two or three great players here. But I am a little bit disappointed with my performance today and I still think I could have done way better."

Berdych reaches Madrid final after beating Delpo

Tomas Berdych overcame Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(5), 7-6(6) and reached the final of the Mutua Madrid Open.

Del Potro was a break up and served for the first set a 5-4, but was broken and Berdych clinched the opener in the tie-break.

In the second set was Berdych who was able to get a break and lead the Argentine but del Potro recovered and broke back for 3-3.

They reached the tie breaker once more and Berdych again held his nerve to seal the victory in two hours and 18 minutes.

Berdych will face either Roger Federer or Janko Tipsarevic in Sunday´s final.

Groth recorded fastest serve at 263kph

Sam Groth hit the fastest recorded serve in professional tennis, a 263kph ace in a Challenger event in South Korea.

Groth, ranked 340th, produced the serve in a second-round match against Uladzimir Ignatik in Busan.

While the ATP does not officially recognize serving speed records because of the variance in radar guns it confirmed "the event was using approved equipment, and that other data gathered appeared within a normal range."

Groth (@samuelgroth on Twitter), tweeted after the match: 'Lost 4&3 average! Did hit a 263kmh serve though in for an ace.'
